Simeon the New Theologian

Simeon the New Theologian
(949–1022)
   Mystic, Devotional Writer and Saint.
Simeon was a monk, first at Studios, the famous monastery in Constantinople, and then at St Mamas. Between 981 and 1005 he was Abbot, but his teachings aroused such hostility that he was sent into exile in 1005 and he remained in retirement for the rest of his life. He produced many ethical and theological treatises as well as hymns. His style was direct and vivid and he stressed his vision of the divine light. Influenced by macarius of egypt, isaac of nineveh and basil the Great, he was an important figure in the history of Hesychasm, the Eastern tradition of inner mystical prayer. He is probably known as the ‘New’ theologian in contrast with Gregory of nazianzus who was known as ‘the Theologian’.
